Simvastatin: Managing Cholesterol

Simvastatin works by blocking the production of an enzyme in the liver called HMG-CoA reductase. This enzyme is responsible for the production of cholesterol in the liver. By blocking this enzyme, simvastatin reduces the production of 'bad cholesterol' (non-HDL cholesterol) and triglycerides in the liver, and increases 'good cholesterol' (HDL cholesterol) levels in the body. HDL cholesterol carries non-HDL cholesterol away from the arteries to be broken down by the liver and eliminated from the body.

Simvastatin is mainly prescribed to adults who have high levels of non-HDL cholesterol and triglycerides in their blood, which can be caused by a combination of lifestyle factors and genetics. However, it can also be prescribed to those at high risk of developing cardiovascular problems, even if their lipid levels are normal. In some cases, simvastatin can also be used in children.

Simvastatin is available as tablets or oral liquid and is usually taken in the evening, as it works best when taken at this time. The dose and frequency of simvastatin will be determined by your doctor based on your individual needs. It can be taken with or without food, but it is important to avoid drinking grapefruit juice, as it can interact with simvastatin and increase the risk of side effects. Women of childbearing age should use contraception while taking simvastatin, as it carries a risk of causing birth defects.

If you are allergic to simvastatin or any of the ingredients in the medication, you should avoid taking it. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also avoid taking simvastatin. Women who wish to try for a baby while taking simvastatin should speak to their doctor and ideally stop taking it three months before trying to conceive. People with a history of liver problems should also avoid taking simvastatin.

Potential Side Effects

As with any medication, simvastatin can cause side effects. Common side effects include nausea, constipation or diarrhea, flatulence, headache, dizziness, physical weakness, and tingling feelings. Muscle complaints are also an important side effect to watch out for when taking a statin, as they may indicate a severe medical condition called rhabdomyolysis. This rare occurrence is due to the breakdown of muscles and can lead to kidney damage, which is why they get you to take regular kidney function tests. Therefore, if you develop any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, you should speak with your doctor promptly.
