Pharmacist FAQs

What is Bazuka Treatment Gel used for?

Bazuka is a gel for treating verrucas, warts, corns and calluses. It softens the hardened skin to allow removal of the softened skin, and it also helps to kill the virus that causes warts and verrucas.

What's in it?

There are two active ingredients in Bazuka:

Salicylic acid (12%) – breaks down thickened skin and helps to peel

Lactic acid (4%) – softens the affected skin and also increases the activity of salicylic acid

These are in a film-forming gel that creates a water-resistant layer over the treated area when it dries.

How does it work?

The gel forms a protective layer over the wart, verruca, corn or callus. This has two effects:

Helps trap the active ingredients so they work overnight

Prevents the virus from infecting other parts of the body or other people

How do I use Bazuka Gel?

  • Apply once daily, preferably before going to bed.
  • Clean and dry the affected area first.
  • Apply 1–2 drops directly onto the affected area only - be careful not to get it onto healthy skin.
  • Allow the gel to dry for a few minutes to form a protective film.
  • Remove the old film the next evening and reapply the fresh gel.

Do I have to soak or file the skin?

No, not necessarily. The gel gradually softens the skin, but you can gently file away loosened dead skin (e.g., with an emery board) once a week if advised. Do not over-file, as this may cause irritation or bleeding.

Who can use Bazuka?

Suitable for adults, the elderly, and children over 2 years old

Children aged 2 to 12 years should be treated under adult supervision

Not suitable for toddlers and infants under 2 years old

Who should not use Bazuka?

Do not use if:

  • You have diabetes or poor circulation
  • You are using it on sensitive areas (face, neck, armpits, breasts, bottom, or genitals)
  • You have moles, birthmarks, or warts with hairs growing in them
  • The skin is cut, infected, or inflamed
  • You are allergic to salicylic acid, lactic acid, or any of the other ingredients

If you are unsure whether the skin condition is a wart, verruca, corn or callus, consult your local pharmacist or GP before use.

How long will it take to work?

Most verrucas and warts clear within 4 to 12 weeks of daily treatment. Calluses and corns may respond more quickly. Continue to apply the gel until the skin returns to normal.

What if I miss a dose?

Just apply the gel the following evening. Do not apply a double dose.

What are the likely side effects?

Common side effects include:

  • Mild irritation, soreness, or redness on or around the treated area
  • Peeling or flaking of the skin (this means it's working)

Stop using it and consult a healthcare professional if:

  • You experience severe burning or pain
  • The skin becomes infected
  • Symptoms worsen or fail to improve after 12 weeks

Can Bazuka spread to healthy skin?

Yes. Be careful not to apply the gel beyond the affected area. A build-up on healthy skin can cause irritation or damage to the skin, especially with prolonged use.

Can I cover the treated area with a plaster?

Bazuka dries to form its protective film; covering it with a plaster is not usually needed. Some people use one, though, to prevent picking or to avoid rubbing against shoes (e.g., for foot verrucas).

Is Bazuka safe to use with other treatments?

Don't apply Bazuka with other treatments for warts unless you have been told to do so by a doctor or pharmacist. If you use other gels or creams on the same part of the skin, ask about interactions first.

Is it flammable?

Yes. Bazuka also contains ethanol and other flammable ingredients. Keep away from flames, cigarettes, and sources of heat. Allow to dry before dressing or going to bed.

What's the difference between warts, verrucas, corns and calluses?

Warts – small, rough growths on fingers and hands typically

Verrucas – warts on the feet, typically with a black spot in the middle

Corns – small, thickened areas of skin, usually because of friction or pressure (e.g., from shoes)

Calluses – larger thick areas of skin, also because of rubbing or pressure

Bazuka can treat all four, but always consult a pharmacist if you're unsure about what you're dealing with.

How do I store Bazuka?

  • At room temperature, below 25°C
  • Replace the cap tightly after use
  • Out of the reach of children and direct sunlight
  • Do not use it if the nozzle or bottle is damaged
