Canesten Clotrimazole Cream for Thrush (20g)
Product Summary
Canesten Cream is used to treat fungal skin infections such as ringworm, athlete’s foot, fungal nappy rash and fungal sweat rash.
It is also used to relieve irritation of the vulva (external thrush) or the end of the penis, which may be associated with thrush.
The active substance in Canesten Cream is Clotrimazole 1% w/w.

Directions
Canesten Cream should be applied thinly and evenly to the affected areas two or three times daily and rubbed in gently.
A strip of cream (0.5 cm long) is enough to treat an area about the size of the hand.
The duration of the treatment depends upon the type of infection.
Generally, a minimum of two weeks is required, although up to four weeks may be necessary.
If you have athlete’s foot, it may help to use an antifungal dusting powder as well. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to recommend one.

Pharmacist FAQs Answered
How long does Canesten Cream take to work?
Improvement in symptoms such as itching and redness usually occurs within a few days of starting treatment. However, it's essential to continue using the cream for the full course as instructed - usually at least 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the nature of the infection - to ensure that the fungus has been eliminated completely and to prevent the infection from returning.
What if I miss using the cream?
If you forget a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next application, skip the missed one - don't apply twice the amount to catch up. To get the best results, try to apply it at evenly spaced intervals during the day.
Can I use Canesten Cream on broken or sore skin?
No - don't put the cream on open wounds or very broken skin. If the infected area is sore or weeping, talk to your pharmacist or GP first, as you may need a different treatment or a more gentle product.
What if my symptoms don't improve?
If your symptoms have not improved after seven days, or if they worsen at any point, discontinue cream use and discuss with your pharmacist or GP. You may need a different antifungal or a more potent prescription treatment.
Can I use Canesten Cream in children?
Yes, Canesten Cream can be used in children under supervision. For instance, for a nappy rash caused by a fungal infection, always consult a healthcare professional for advice before starting treatment.
Can I use Canesten Cream on my face?
Canesten Cream should not be used on the face since facial skin is more sensitive and more likely to react. If you believe you have a fungal infection on your face, consult your pharmacist or GP for suitable alternatives.
Can I use Canesten Cream together with oral antifungal tablets?
In some cases, yes - topical and oral antifungals can be used together, especially for more resistant or larger infections. But always check with your prescriber or pharmacist before taking multiple treatments.
Is Canesten Cream safe in pregnancy?
Yes, clotrimazole is generally considered safe in pregnancy when used externally. However, checking with your doctor or midwife before use is always best. A lower-dose cream like Canesten 1% is often recommended for treating external thrush.
Does Canesten Cream treat bacterial infections?
No, Canesten Cream is only effective against fungal infections. If you suspect you have a bacterial infection, you will require a different type of treatment. Some of the symptoms of bacterial infection include yellow or green discharge, increasing pain, or fever.
Can I swim or take communal showers while using Canesten Cream?
It is advisable to avoid swimming pools and communal showers until the infection has cleared, since they can both worsen symptoms and make it easier to infect others.
Does Canesten Cream have a smell or stain clothes?
Canesten Cream is fragrance-free and should not stain clothing if used as directed. Allow the cream to dry completely into the skin before dressing.
