How Clearblue Digital pregnancy work?

All home pregnancy tests detect the ‘pregnancy hormone’, human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG) in urine. The amount of hCG in your body increases in the early stages of pregnancy since it is produced first by the fertilised egg and later the placenta.

A fertilised egg typically implants into the lining of the uterus (womb) 6-8 days before the missed period, when tiny amounts of hCG start to appear in the mother’s blood and urine.

Though hCG levels are very low at first, the level rises rapidly and predictably in the first weeks of pregnancy.

Clearblue can detect tiny amounts of this hormone in your urine. (The sensitivity of this test is 25mlU/ml).

Based on the level of hCG in your urine, the Clearblue conception indicator provides an estimate of when you conceived.

How accurate is Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test in detecting pregnancy?

In laboratory tests Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Tests is more than 99% accurate in detecting whether or not you are pregnant when used from the day your period is due. If you test before your period is due and get a 'not pregnant' result, there is still a chance you may be pregnant.

How accurate is the Clearblue conception indicator?

The conception indicator is 92% accurate at detecting when you conceived. The estimate is based on the level of hCG in your urine.

The level of hCG varies from woman to woman, and it is, therefore, possible that the conception indicator might occasionally give misleading results. The accuracy of the 'pregnant'/'not pregnant' result is over 99% accurate when testing from the day the period is due.

If you are testing more than 6 weeks after conception the conception indicator may give unexpected results. This is because the level of hCG in the urine is too high for the test to provide an accurate estimate of the time since conception

How to use a pregnancy test

Please read the enclosed instructions carefully before use.

Before you begin

Please always read the instruction leaflet carefully before doing a Clearblue Pregnancy Test with Weeks Indicator.

If you're testing from the day of your expected period, you can test at any time of the day to find out if you're pregnant.

If you're testing early, and for an accurate Weeks Indicator result, you must use the first urine of the day.

Avoid drinking too much liquid before you do the digital pregnancy test.

When ready to test, remove the test stick from the foil wrapper and take off the blue cap. Use the test straightaway.

Doing the test

  • Simply place just the absorbent tip pointing downwards in your urine stream for 5 seconds only. Take care not to get the rest of the digital pregnancy test stick wet.
  • Alternatively, you can instead collect a sample of your urine in a clean, dry container.
  • Place the absorbent tip pointing downwards in the urine for 20 seconds only.
  • You may wish to replace the cap and lay the digital pregnancy test stick flat.
  • Keep the tip pointing downwards or lay the digital pregnancy test stick flat while you wait for the result.

IMPORTANT:

Throughout testing never hold the test stick with the absorbent tip pointing upwards.

Wait 3 minutes

  • After doing the Clearblue Pregnancy Test with Weeks Indicator an hourglass 'wait' symbol will flash to show that the test is working.
  • When the wait symbol stops flashing your result will appear.

Read your results

  • Within 3 minutes, your final result will be displayed.
  • It is possible for a 'Pregnant' result to appear before the Weeks Indicator result. Continue to wait until the hourglass stops flashing to see your Weeks Indicator result.
  • Your result will remain on the display for approximately 24 hours.

Warnings and Restrictions

  • This device is for home use.
  • Please read the enclosed instructions carefully before use.
  • Keep out of the reach of children.

Pharmacist FAQs Answered

Can I trust a positive result even if the result is slightly delayed or the screen?

Yes, of course. The Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test is designed to display results in clear words—Pregnant or Not Pregnant—so there's no confusion interpreting faint lines. The test has digital technology which may sometimes take a bit longer to process depending on the urine sample, but it doesn't hold up the accuracy of your result. If the screen isn't responding or the hourglass symbol just keeps flashing for more than 10 minutes with no result, then this may be an error, and it's recommended to redo the test with a new stick. Otherwise, any result that is clear, even if it is late, is reliable and valid.

Is it possible to get a 'Not Pregnant' result if I'm actually pregnant?

Yes, in certain circumstances. A 'Not Pregnant' result can occur if you test too early, when your body has not had enough time to accumulate sufficient hCG (the pregnancy hormone) for detection. In addition, conditions like diluted urine - a product of drinking lots of liquids before testing - or an irregular menstrual cycle will result in a false negative. For optimum results, test on or after the day of your anticipated period using your first-morning urine. If you still suspect pregnancy after getting a negative test, it's optimal to wait 2–3 days and try once more. Ongoing symptoms should always be followed up with a healthcare practitioner.

How reliable is the Weeks Indicator compared to an ultrasound scan?

The Weeks Indicator feature estimates how many weeks have passed since conception by measuring hCG levels in urine. While it is 92% accurate, it is still an estimate and not a substitute for a medical dating scan. The hCG levels vary significantly from individual to individual, and conditions such as multiple pregnancy or delayed implantation may affect the outcome. The gold standard for determining gestational age is an ultrasound, which is typically done at around 8–12 weeks of pregnancy. The Weeks Indicator is helpful in early stages but must be supplemented with medical verification for optimal and most accurate dating.

What does the '1-2', '2-3', or '3+' weeks result mean?

These numbers are the approximate number of weeks since conception occurred:

  • 1-2 weeks: likely to be 3-4 weeks pregnant by standard medical dating
  • 2-3 weeks: around 4-5 weeks pregnant
  • 3+ weeks: indicates 5 or more weeks pregnant

Doctors work out pregnancy from the first day of your last period, which is usually about two weeks before conception. So the result on the Clearblue test can be fewer weeks than you would be counted as pregnant by your GP. It is just something to bear in mind to avoid confusion when you are talking to a health professional about your results.

Do other medications or medical conditions affect the test result?

Most over-the-counter medications, hormonal contraception, or antibiotics do not affect pregnancy test results. There are exceptions, however. Fertility medications that contain hCG (some injections for IVF, for example) can lead to a false positive if you take the test too close to the time you took the medication. Similarly, if you've been pregnant recently - even if it didn't go to term - your hCG levels may still be high enough to yield a positive test. Rare medical conditions, such as certain ovarian cysts and tumours, also secrete hCG. If you're unsure or obtain unexpected results, it's always a good idea to consult with your local healthcare provider for guidance.

Is morning testing more reliable than later-in-the-day testing?

Yes, especially if you are taking the test early, before the day your period is due. The hCG level is most concentrated in the morning urine because it has been building up overnight, so this is the best time to detect early pregnancy. Taking the test later in the day and when the urine is diluted (because plenty of fluids have been consumed) will result in the hCG levels being too low to register a positive reading. After your missed period, you can test at any time of day, but first-morning urine is still best for accuracy, especially if your cycle is irregular or unpredictable.

How soon after unprotected sex can I test with this product?

Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Tests are accurate from the day your period is due. Some women will test early - up to four days before the anticipated period - but reliability is decreased, especially if ovulation has been later than expected. Testing as early as after unprotected sex is too early, since conception does not take place instantly. Fertilisation can happen a number of days after sexual intercourse, and implantation (which initiates hCG production) normally occurs 6–10 days after ovulation. For a reliable result, it's better to wait until at least 21 days after unprotected sex or until your period is due.

How do I safely dispose of the test after use?

Once you have read your result, the test is not reusable and can be disposed of in regular household rubbish. The Clearblue Digital Pregnancy Test contains a small battery, which powers the digital display. In some places, this may qualify as electronic waste. If the waste disposal regulations in your area have particular instructions for disposing of items that contain batteries, you can opt to follow them. For most people, however, it's okay to simply throw the used test into your regular trash. Store unused tests and any packaging material out of the reach of children and pets at all times.
