Pharmacist FAQs Answered
What is Corsodyl 0.2% Mouthwash for?
Corsodyl 0.2% Alcohol-Free Mint Mouthwash is a medicinal mouthwash and is designed to help treat and prevent gum disease, including gingivitis. It is also used to treat mouth ulcers, thrush, and irritation due to dentures. Chlorhexidine digluconate, the active ingredient, is a powerful antibacterial that lowers plaque and eliminates bacteria that are destructive to the mouth, especially in areas that are hard to clean.
How does Corsodyl work in the treatment of gum problems?
Corsodyl works on killing the bacteria responsible for causing gum inflammation and bleeding. Prolonged use results in plaque reduction, soothing painful, inflamed gums, and promoting healing after oral treatment. It also helps keep patients' mouths clean, especially those who cannot brush due to pain or dental surgery.
When would I use Corsodyl in place of a regular mouthwash?
Use Corsodyl if you have specific dental or gum issues that need aggressive treatment—such as the early signs of gum disease, mouth ulcers, or following oral surgery. In contrast to cosmetic mouthwashes, Corsodyl is a medicated mouthwash used for short periods and targeted treatment. It is not for long-term daily use except on advice from a dentist.
Can I use Corsodyl after toothpaste?
Yes, but wait at least 5 minutes after brushing before using Corsodyl. Some toothpastes contain agents, such as sodium lauryl sulfate, that can inactivate chlorhexidine. Rinse your mouth out with water following brushing and allow time to pass before using the mouthwash to produce maximum effectiveness.
How long should I use Corsodyl 0.2% for gum disease?
A typical course for gum disease is about one month, during which time 600ml of mouthwash is used twice a day. This can help control symptoms such as bleeding, soreness, and swelling. After one month, seek advice from your dentist before continuing use since excessive use could cause side effects like staining.
Does Corsodyl work for mouth ulcers or oral thrush?
Yes. Corsodyl can prevent mouth ulcers by reducing bacterial load and inhibiting irritation. If oral thrush happens, treat it by suppressing symptoms and keeping the mouth clean, particularly where tooth brushing is painful. Something more targeted like Daktarin may be more suitable for oral thrush. In both situations, continue to use Corsodyl for two days after the improvement in symptoms and treat extensively.
How to use Corsodyl to clean dentures?
Corsodyl can be used to clean and disinfect for sore mouth due to dentures. Soak dentures in undiluted mouthwash for 15 minutes twice daily. This decreases bacteria that can cause irritation and prevents infection of the mouth's soft tissues.
What are the possible side effects of Corsodyl?
Side effects include typical short-term discoloration of the teeth or tongue, a change of taste, and a burning sensation when first used. These side effects are temporary and disappear after treatment is finished. Stains can be avoided by avoiding tea, coffee, or red wine for an hour after use and brushing the mouth regularly.
Is Corsodyl safe to take when pregnant or in children?
Corsodyl is not recommended for children under 12 unless at the discretion of a dentist. Corsodyl is safe to take while pregnant and breastfeeding. However, as with all medication, check with your dentist or doctor if you're unsure, especially if you're taking Corsodyl for pre-existing medical conditions or already taking other medicines.
What should I avoid doing while taking Corsodyl mouthwash?
To minimise staining, avoid drinking strongly coloured beverages (such as red wine, tea, and coffee) for one hour after mouthwash application. Do not swallow the mouthwash and avoid applying it to the eyes or ears—rinse well if accidental contact is made. Avoid taking more than the recommended dosage and treatment period except on the advice of a medical practitioner.
Where and how should Corsodyl mouthwash be stored?
Store Corsodyl at room temperature (less than 25°C) and out of direct sunlight. Always read the use-by date and keep the bottle out of children's reach. To maintain the quality of the product, the first opening should have an intact seal.
