Pharmacist FAQs Answered
Can I use Daktarin Aktiv Cream on other parts of my body, like my arms or my back?
Daktarin Aktiv Cream is meant to treat athlete's foot between the toes or on the foot. But the antifungal drug (miconazole nitrate) can also be used on other minor fungal infections of the skin, such as ringworm or jock itch, that could appear on the arms, legs, back, or the groin area. If you are thinking of using it on some other part of your body, then it is recommended to consult a pharmacist first. Some areas of the skin are more sensitive, and in those cases, a gentler or more localised treatment could be a better choice.
How long do I apply the cream for my symptoms to clear up?
Even if the redness or itching goes away within a few days, it's still important to keep applying the cream for 7 more days after the skin looks normal again. This is because the fungus can still be there, although you can't see it. Stopping treatment too early might allow the infection to come back. Most people treat the infection for 2 to 4 weeks, but this will vary depending on how nasty the infection was when you started.
Is it safe to use this cream with other treatments for the skin?
You can use a moisturiser or foot deodorant spray at another time of day, but it is best to leave a gap of at least 30 minutes between applying Daktarin Aktiv Cream and any other product on the same skin area. This allows the antifungal cream to do its job properly without getting washed off or blocked. If you are taking any other medicated skin treatment on the same site, discuss with your pharmacist to inquire if they can be taken together safely.
How do I prevent athlete's foot from recurring?
To keep athlete's foot from returning, try to maintain clean and dry feet, especially between the toes. Change socks daily, and try to wear shoes that let your feet "breathe", like sandals or trainers with venting. The practice of using warm water and soap to bathe your feet, then thoroughly drying them out, is advisable too. You might even go so far as to put some antifungal powder or spray inside your shoes, since the fungi can thrive there too. If you visit public places like swimming pools or gyms, use flip-flops to avoid getting the fungus again.
Is it all right to use Daktarin Aktiv Cream on sore and cracked skin?
Yes, using the cream on a little cracked and sore skin is usually fine because of athlete's foot. In fact, one of the good things about this cream is that it has ingredients that soothe inflamed skin as well as treat the infection. But if the cracks are deep, are bleeding, or are very painful, then it is best to go see a doctor or pharmacist first before applying it. You will likely need some other treatment, especially if the area is infected with bacteria or has been badly damaged.
