Pharmacist FAQs Answered
How do Deep Heat patches ease muscle and joint pain?
Deep Heat patches utilise heat treatment to give instant, long-term relief from joint soreness and muscular aches. The heat in the patch relieves tight muscles and soreness where it's applied, promoting relaxation. Additionally, it promotes increased blood circulation, which provides the area with nutrients and oxygen to recover sooner. This non-drug method of pain relief is effective against backache, shoulder tension, and leg cramps.
When should I use a Deep Heat patch?
Use a Deep Heat patch when you're feeling aches, stiffness, or mild sprains, especially in the lower back, neck, hips, thighs or shoulders. These heat patches for pain are ideal for everyday muscle aches, stiffness on the job, or after mild exercise. Don't apply heat if the area is bruised, swollen, or newly injured - cold is better for swelling for the first 48 hours.
Can it be left on at night to sleep?
No, you should not sleep with a heat patch on. Even though Deep Heat patches may last for up to 8 hours of pain relief, sleeping with one on will apply the patch too tightly to your skin and risk irritating or burning you. It is preferable to wear them when you are awake throughout the day to monitor how your skin is feeling.
Can the patch be directly applied to the skin?
Yes, Deep Heat patches are designed to be applied directly to dry, clean skin. However, if your skin is very sensitive, elderly, or irritated, it's better to apply the patch to your clothing instead. That way, the heat can still perform its work without any risk of burning or irritation. Always follow the package instructions to protect yourself.
Is it possible to use more than a single heat patch per day?
For safety, only one patch should be used on the same area within 24 hours. Each patch gives up to 8 hours of heat, and your skin needs time to cool off afterwards. Using more than one patch or keeping it on for too long can overheat your skin or cause skin damage. If you’re still in pain after 8 hours, consult a pharmacist for other pain relief options.
What if the patch causes irritation or itching?
Remove the patch immediately if your skin is itchy, hot, or irritated. Wash the area gently with water and wait until the skin has fully settled before applying a new patch. Sometimes, the heat is too much to bear, especially with sensitive skin. If irritation worsens, ask a doctor or pharmacist before applying another Deep Heat product.
Who should avoid using Deep Heat Pain Relief Heat Patches?
Deep Heat patches are not suitable for children under 12, people who can’t remove the patch themselves, or those with certain health conditions. If you’re pregnant, have diabetes, poor blood circulation, nerve damage, or skin conditions, always ask your doctor first. These factors can make your skin more sensitive to heat, increasing the risk of burns.
