Pharmacist FAQs Answered

What is cradle cap, and how does the shampoo assist?

Cradle cap is a common condition in babies and newborns, generally in the form of dry, flaky or yellowish scales on the scalp. It is harmless and non-infectious, but may look as though it will be painful. Dentinox Cradle Cap Shampoo is designed to soften and lift off these flakes while gently cleansing the baby's scalp. The active ingredients will dissolve the buildup of natural oils, which tends to make the flakes stick.

How often should I apply this shampoo to my baby?

You can apply Dentinox Cradle Cap Shampoo every time you bathe your baby until your baby's cradle cap is clear. It is gentle enough to use every day. If your baby's scalp looks healthy and clean, you can use it as a regular baby shampoo to prevent the flakes from returning.

Can I apply this shampoo to newborns?

Yes, it's safe to use this shampoo from birth. It contains effective yet gentle ingredients that won't irritate a baby's sensitive scalp. Still, always patch test 24 hours before first use to ensure that your baby's skin won't be reactive to the product.

Why is my baby's scalp red or irritated after shampooing?

Stop using it and contact your local healthcare professional if you notice any redness, swelling, or irritation after shampooing. Some ingredients can cause sensitive skin or allergic reactions in a few babies. It is always best to test on a small skin area first, especially if your baby has eczema or sensitive skin.

Is it all right to use on the soft spot (fontanelle) on the top of a baby's head?

Yes, it is all right to lightly rub the shampoo all over the scalp, even over the soft spot. The fontanelle is well protected by skin and light cleaning will not harm your baby. Just be gentle and don't scrub.

Can I use other baby shampoos at the same time?

It is safest not to use other shampoos when using Dentinox to treat cradle cap. Using products together may lead to dryness or irritation. Once the cradle cap has gone, you may wish to continue using Dentinox as your baby's normal shampoo, or change to another mild one.

What if the cradle cap does not go away?

If your baby's cradle cap doesn't improve after shampooing for a few weeks or seems to be getting worse, it's wise to speak to your doctor or pharmacist. At times, cradle cap can become infected or be confused with conditions like eczema, which may need different treatment.
