    Pharmacist FAQs Answered

What is Eumovate Cream, and what does it do?

Eumovate Cream is used to treat short-term flare-ups of eczema and dermatitis. It contains a mild steroid, Clobetasone butyrate 0.05%, to reduce redness, swelling, and itchiness of the skin caused by inflammation. It is handy when ordinary moisturisers are ineffective in calming the skin. Eumovate damps down the body's overactive immune reaction, breaking the itch-scratch cycle and enabling your skin to heal. It also moisturises to keep the skin hydrated, even during flare-ups, providing up to 24 hours of relief after each application.

How long can you take Eumovate Cream for?

Eumovate must only be used for a short duration—7 days in adults and children over 12 years old. Use a thin layer two times a day on the affected skin. If your skin worsens or doesn't improve after one week, stop using it and consult a doctor or pharmacist. It should not be used for long periods without medical supervision, as prolonged use of topical steroids can cause skin thinning or other side effects. Read the instruction leaflet or your physician's instructions.

Can Eumovate be applied on the face or other sensitive areas?

No, do not use Eumovate on the face, genitalia, or between the toes except on medical advice. These parts of skin are thin and sensitive, absorb steroids more quickly and are more likely to get side effects like irritation or thinning. If you have facial eczema, see a healthcare professional who can recommend a more suitable treatment, such as a lower-strength emulsion or a non-steroidal cream.

Can I use a moisturiser with Eumovate Cream?

You can, and should, still moisturise the skin when using Eumovate, as eczema and dermatitis are generally very dry skin conditions. The best regime is to apply Eumovate first, allow it time to penetrate (around 15–30 minutes), and then apply your usual emollient or moisturiser. This keeps moisture and helps heal the skin since the active component works on inflammation. Don't use the two products simultaneously because this thins out the steroid and makes it less effective.

Can Eumovate be safely used with other medications or treatments for the skin?

Eumovate may usually be taken safely with other medications, but do not use it simultaneously with other local corticosteroids, such as hydrocortisone, unless your doctor advises you to. Tell your pharmacist if you use other prescription or over-the-counter skin-care products, especially in the same area. If you are pregnant, lactating, or trying to get pregnant, talk to your doctor first before using this product. Even though it's a weaker steroid, topical products can still penetrate the blood to some degree, so it's best to check with your local medical professional.
