Pharmacist FAQs Answered
How does Fybogel naturally relieve constipation?
Fybogel has ispaghula husk, a natural soluble fibre form that softens and bulks out your stool. Dissolved in water, the husk absorbs water and swells up. This bulks out your stool so it can pass more easily through your digestive system without straining or pressing it. Unlike powerful laxatives, Fybogel works naturally and gently by helping your bowels work properly. It does not cause sudden rushes or cramps, and it helps your body return to a normal toilet routine. This is especially helpful for people who have conditions like IBS or haemorrhoids, or who are recovering from surgery. Because it works in line with your body's natural rhythm, it is safe to take for the long term and ideal for maintaining day-to-day digestive health.
Can I take Fybogel every day to stay regular?
Yes, Fybogel may be taken daily to help maintain regular bowel action, especially if you struggle to eat a high-fibre diet or experience recurring issues like IBS, piles, or occasional constipation. It's a natural fiber supplement, not a stimulant laxative, so it won't get your body to have a bowel movement. Instead, it works more gently by softening your stool and making it bulkier, which makes it easier to pass. Fybogel is taken daily by many individuals to stay comfortable and avoid constipation. However, it is also essential to drink plenty of water throughout the day, as fibre needs liquid in order to work properly. If your symptoms last for several days or worsen, visit a doctor or pharmacist to rule out more serious issues.
Is Fybogel safe to use when pregnant or breastfeeding?
Fybogel is used regularly to cure constipation in pregnancy and is a safe remedy as it is not digested into the bloodstream and only acts in the intestines. So it will not hurt your baby. Constipation affects most women who are pregnant because of hormonal effects and pressure on the bowel, and increasing the fibre content in your foods will ease it. But always ask your doctor or midwife first if you're going to take any new medication, such as Fybogel, when pregnant or breastfeeding. It's particularly important to drink lots of water when taking fibre supplements when pregnant. It's best not to take it close to the time of other drugs, as it can delay them from entering the bloodstream.
Can children use Fybogel, and how much is the right dose?
Fybogel is suitable for children aged 6 to 12, but the dose should be given according to their weight and age. Children in this age group should take half to one 5ml spoonful, once or twice daily after food, preferably with a whole glass of water. It is not suitable for children under 6 years of age unless advised by a doctor. Always supervise children when giving them Fybogel to ensure it is mixed well and taken with enough water, as not doing so could cause a blockage in the throat or intestines. If your child’s symptoms don’t improve after a few days or if they experience any pain or unusual symptoms, consult your pharmacist or GP.
Can Fybogel interfere with other medications I’m taking?
Yes, Fybogel will slow the way some medicines are absorbed into your body. Because it forms a bulky, gel-filled mass in the stomach and intestines, it may slow down or reduce the absorption of other medications when taken simultaneously. To avoid this, take Fybogel at least 30 minutes before or after other medicines. This goes for prescription and over-the-counter drugs. If you are taking regular medication, especially for heart disease, diabetes, or thyroid disorders, discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist before you start Fybogel. They can tell you the best time to take it without interfering and how to take your other drugs so that they will still have their effect.
