Before using Ibuleve Max Strength Pain Relief Gel

  • Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using if you suffer from asthma, have ever had a stomach or duodenal ulcer, or are taking any prescribed medicines.
  • Although there is less risk of this product causing the complications that sometimes arise when ibuprofen (or similar anti-inflammatory painkillers) are taken by mouth, patients with asthma, an active peptic ulcer or a history of kidney problems should seek medical advice before use, as should patients already taking aspirin or other painkillers.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to any of the ingredients, or if you have experienced problems with Aspirin, Ibuprofen or related painkillers (including when taken by mouth).
  • Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Keep away from broken skin, the eyes, nose and mouth.

Taking other medicines

Interaction between Ibuleve Max Strength Speed relief gel and blood pressure-lowering drugs and anticoagulants (medicines that stop blood clotting) is possible in theory, although less likely than with oral Ibuprofen.

If you would like more advice about this, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

If you are also taking aspirin or other NSAIDs by mouth, discuss this beforehand with your doctor or pharmacist because these may increase the risk of undesirable effects.

Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including other medicines obtained without a prescription.

Storage

Replace cap tightly after use.

Do not store above 25°C.

If symptoms worsen or persist for longer than 7 days, consult your doctor.

Keep all medicines out of reach and sight of children.

Pharmacist FAQs Answered

What is Ibuleve Max Strength Pain Relief Gel for?

Ibuleve Max Strength Pain Relief Gel contains 10% ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which relieves pain, swelling, and inflammation. It is indicated for muscular backache, sprains, strains, sports injuries, and rheumatic or muscular pain. This gel is applied to the skin and is absorbed to act locally at the pain site without going through the digestive tract. It is for use by adults, the elderly, and children aged 12 years and above. It provides a localised solution that spares much of the gastrointestinal side effects of oral NSAIDs. Apply not to broken or irritated skin, nor in contact with the eyes, nose, and mouth.

How do I use Ibuleve Gel correctly?

Apply a thin layer (2-5 cm) to the painful area up to three times a day, with at least 4 hours between each dose. Gently rub the gel into your skin until it is fully absorbed. Wash your hands afterwards, except when applying them. Do not apply under waterproof dressings or bandages, and avoid applying to cut, sunburned, or inflamed skin. The gel should not be used by children under 12 years of age unless advised by a doctor. If your symptoms do not improve after two weeks or worsen, talk to your pharmacist or doctor.

Who should not take this gel?

Do not take Ibuleve Gel if you are allergic to ibuprofen, aspirin, or other NSAIDs, or if you have previously had asthma, a skin rash, or stomach upset due to them. Avoid during pregnancy or breastfeeding except on medical advice. See a pharmacist first if you have asthma, an ulcer, or kidney disease, or if you take other medicines, especially blood thinners or tablets for high blood pressure. Although applied topically, ibuprofen may interfere with other medication, particularly oral NSAIDs. This gel should not be used internally and must not come into contact with the eyes, mouth, or injured skin.

Can I take this gel together with other medicines?

Topical ibuprofen is generally less likely to interact with other medications compared to oral tablets. However, care must still be taken. If you take aspirin, warfarin (or other anti-blood thinners), antihypertensives, or other NSAIDs, consult your doctor or pharmacist first. Taking more than a single NSAID simultaneously may enhance the risk of side effects, even if one is used topically. Double-check always before combining treatments—especially if you have chronic illnesses like arthritis, high blood pressure, or diabetes. If you take any prescription or over-the-counter painkillers, double-check with a doctor before taking this gel.

Is Ibuleve safe to use long term?

Ibuleve Max Strength Gel is intended for short-term relief only and should not be taken continuously for more than 2 weeks unless on the advice of a medical professional. Continuous or worsening pain may be indicative that there is an underlying reason for which treatment by a medical professional is necessary. While prolonged administration of oral NSAIDs is more likely to cause stomach, kidney, or cardiovascular disorders, topically administered ibuprofen is less likely to have systemic side effects. However, repetitive or ongoing use needs to be checked, especially in those who are ill. Always follow the label instructions and speak to your pharmacist if you are unsure how long to use it.
