FAQs Answered by Pharmacists
How does Lamisil AT Spray treat fungal infections?
Lamisil AT 1% Spray is composed of terbinafine, an antifungal medication that blocks the growth of fungi. Fungi need a chemical substance known as ergosterol to grow and spread. Terbinafine blocks the synthesis of this chemical, resulting in the breaking and destruction of the fungal cells. This helps to remove typical fungal infections like athlete's foot and jock itch (dhobie itch) when sprayed on the affected regions for the correct duration of time.
How do I spray it to get the most effect?
Wash and dry the area before spraying it to get the maximum effect. Stand a few inches from your skin and spritz just enough to put a light coating on. Don't rub in—let air dry. Wash your hands after using them unless you're treating them. Spray once daily for seven consecutive days, even if the symptoms start to subside earlier. This allows for complete removal of the fungus and minimises the chance of recurrence.
Can I apply Lamisil Spray to fungal nail infections or open cuts?
No, Lamisil AT 1% Spray should not be used for nail infections or wounds. Fungal nail infections are deeper and need treatment that can penetrate inside or beneath the nail, typically oral tablets or some specific nail lacquer from a doctor. Also, don't use this spray on fissured, red, or very sensitive skin since alcohol in the spray burns or irritates even more. Please always consult your pharmacist for proper treatment if you have any doubts.
Is it a normal reaction for the skin to sting or itch after using the spray?
A mild stinging or tingling sensation can sometimes occur right after applying Lamisil AT 1% Spray, especially if the skin is dry, cracked, or sore. This feeling usually goes away quickly and isn’t dangerous. However, if the skin becomes very red, swollen, itchy, or blistered, stop using the spray and talk to your pharmacist or doctor. It could mean you’re sensitive to the ingredients or have an allergic reaction.
May I still use moisturisers and other creams while on Lamisil?
While you’re using Lamisil AT Spray, try to avoid applying other skin products—like moisturisers, powders, or medicated creams—to the same area unless your doctor or pharmacist says it’s okay. Other products can dilute the spray, block it from working properly, or cause a reaction. If your skin is very dry, wait until the infection has cleared before starting moisturisers again.
What can I do if I miss a dose or stop taking it too soon?
If you forget a dose, apply it as soon as possible, except if it is almost time for the next one. Then just continue as normal—do not apply a double dose. If you forget to apply it before the week is out—even if the rash is clearing—the fungus may not be cleared properly and can recur. Always complete the course of treatment unless advised otherwise by your pharmacist.
