Pharmacist FAQs Answered
What is Lyclear Dermal Cream used for?
Lyclear Dermal Cream is an anti-scabies and crab lice treatment caused by small parasites that live on or under the skin. The conditions cause intense itching, rashes, and irritation. The cream contains permethrin (5%), a well-established pyrethroid insecticide, which targets the nervous system of these mites, killing them and preventing them from spreading. Lyclear is applied directly to the skin and is designed for external use only. It’s essential to follow the exact application directions, depending on whether you’re treating scabies or crab lice, to ensure the treatment is effective.
How do I use Lyclear Dermal Cream most effectively?
Apply Lyclear Dermal Cream evenly and thoroughly to the affected area. In scabies, this would mean applying the cream all over from the neck down (and the scalp in infants or elderly individuals), paying particular attention to cover skin creases, under the nails, and between the fingers and toes. Leave the cream on for the recommended hours—usually 8–12 hours—before washing off. For crab lice, follow the instructions in the leaflet to treat infected hair-bearing areas. Do not get near eyes, mouth, genitals, or broken skin. Retreatment may be necessary if the cream is washed off prematurely.
Is Lyclear safe for children and babies?
Lyclear can be used in children over 2 months of age, but only under strict medical supervision in children under 2 years of age. Infants have more sensitive skin and absorb more from topical treatment, so specialist advice is required. When treating young children, it's important to avoid face contact, especially around the eyes, nose, and mouth, and to cover treated skin with clothing to prevent accidental ingestion. Don't use on babies under 2 months without a doctor's instructions. Always consult your healthcare professional before treating toddlers or babies with Lyclear.
What precautions should I take while using Lyclear?
When using Lyclear, avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, genital area, and sores. The cream must be used externally only—do not swallow. If irritation, especially from eczema or asthma, worsens after use, discontinue use of the cream and consult your doctor. Avoid using this product if you are allergic to permethrin or chrysanthemum flowers. Lyclear contains formaldehyde and lanolin derivatives, which may cause allergic skin reactions in some people. Avoid using steroids like hydrocortisone during treatment, as they may exacerbate infestations by weakening your own skin's natural defence system.
Can I use Lyclear while pregnant or breastfeeding?
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or expectant, always consult with your doctor before using Lyclear Dermal Cream. Although no intense harm is apparent, there is little information available on using it during lactation and pregnancy, so it would be advisable to proceed with medical advice. If it is approved for use under breastfeeding, avoid applying the cream to the chest area in order to avoid exposure in infants. The management of Lyclear infestation during pregnancy or lactation typically weighs the advantages of treatment against the risks, if any, unless the infestation is distressing.
