Pharmacist FAQs Answered
How is Nurofen Express faster than regular ibuprofen tablets?
Nurofen Express has sodium ibuprofen, a type of ibuprofen that dissolves more rapidly than the regular type. This allows it to be absorbed into your bloodstream more rapidly, allowing it to reach the area of pain faster. This can equate to receiving relief up to twice as fast as with regular ibuprofen tablets. Quick action is more useful for sudden, severe pain like migraines, headaches, or period pain. However, taking the correct dose and following instructions carefully for safe consumption is still important.
Can I take Nurofen Express on an empty stomach?
If you have a sensitive stomach to drugs, it's best to take Nurofen Express with food after a meal. Like all NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), ibuprofen is likely to irritate the stomach lining, which may result in discomfort, indigestion, or ulcers if taken regularly without eating. Taking a small snack or drinking a glass of milk when you take the caplet will reduce this risk. If you have stomach ulcers or gastrointestinal disorders, consult a pharmacist or doctor before using it.
Is Nurofen Express safe to take with other medications?
Nurofen Express may interact with many common drugs, including dietary supplements and medicines used to treat hypertension, thin the blood, or depression. For example, if it is taken with anticoagulant drugs like warfarin or antidepressant medication like SSRIs, it can lead to bleeding or stomach ulcers. If you’re taking any prescription medication, especially for heart, kidney, or immune conditions, speak to a pharmacist or doctor before use. Also, avoid taking it with other NSAIDs (like naproxen or aspirin over 75mg daily), as this can increase side effects without improving pain relief.
How does Nurofen Express compare to paracetamol for pain relief?
Paracetamol is usually prescribed for mild to moderate pain and is more stomach-friendly, but it does not reduce inflammation. As an anti-inflammatory painkiller, Nurofen Express is more effective when swelling and inflammation are present, e.g., for period pain, back pain, or arthritis. In case of uncertainty, pharmacists advise taking the two separately at different times for the short term, depending on whether you are taking them for pain. But always do what is said concerning timing and dosing, and do not take both together unsupervised.
What do I do if I miss a dose or take too much by mistake?
Nurofen Express will only be taken as needed, so missing a dose is not an issue. Take it when pain flares again, at least four hours apart, and do not take more than six caplets in 24 hours. If you take more than you intended, seek medical attention immediately—even if you don't feel sick. Too much can bring on sickness, stomach pain, drowsiness, or worse, on your kidneys or nervous system. Take the leaflet and pack with you if you need help, as this will help healthcare staff look after you better.
Can Nurofen Express be used for a toothache or after dental surgery?
Yes, Nurofen Express is widely used for toothache because it works fast and effectively, soothing inflammation such as puffy gums or after a treatment such as a filling or extraction. After a procedure, however, your dentist may advise combining it with paracetamol for extra relief. Ensure that you follow their specific advice, especially if you have been given antibiotics or there is a risk of bleeding. Avoid extended use except on medical advice, and always tell your dentist if the pain worsens or does not get better.
Is there a food problem with Nurofen Express?
Sodium and sucrose are contained in every caplet of Nurofen Express, which might be important to those with specific dietary requirements. If you have a low-sodium diet (for blood pressure or heart disease), be aware that each tablet contains about 24.3mg of sodium. Also, patients with sugar intolerances, such as fructose intolerance or sucrose-isomaltase deficiency, must speak to their doctor before applying this drug. Always read the ingredients and consult a doctor for dietary problems or chronic diseases.
