Pharmacist FAQs Answered
What are Opticrom Hayfever Eye Drops used for?
Opticrom Hayfever Eye Drops are designed specifically to alleviate eye discomfort from hay fever (seasonal allergic conjunctivitis). Common symptoms include stinging, red, watery, or painful eyes, all triggered by contact with pollen. When you have an allergic reaction, your eyes release histamines and other chemicals, resulting in stinging and swelling. Opticrom contains sodium cromoglicate, which works by preventing the release of these allergic chemicals, calming the eyes and reducing irritation. The drops provide intense relief precisely where it's needed, often starting to work in as little as two minutes. Regular use as directed can help keep symptoms under control during high-pollen times, making you feel more comfortable outdoors or with open windows.
How do you use Opticrom Hayfever Eye Drops correctly?
For best safety and performance, place 1 or 2 drops in each eye, four times a day, unless directed otherwise by your doctor. Before applying the drops, wash your hands thoroughly and avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or any surface, as this can introduce germs into your eye. Lean your head back slightly, depress the lower eyelid slowly to create a small pouch, and press in the prescribed number of drops. After use, blink your eyes gently several times to distribute the medicine evenly. Do not force your eyelids shut or rub your eyes after application. It's wise not to go over the advised dosage and to adhere to all instructions as to how long you may administer the drops, usually no more than 14 days without seeking the advice of a physician.
What is advisable to do when using Opticrom Eye Drops?
Generally safe, there are some precautions you should heed. First, your vision may become blurred after you apply the drops—wait until you can see properly before driving or using machinery. If you wear soft contact lenses, take them out before applying the drops, as the preservative (benzalkonium chloride) might affect the lenses. At least 15 minutes must have passed before lenses can be reinserted. If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first. Also, don't take these drops if you have had an allergic reaction to sodium cromoglicate or any of the listed ingredients—symptoms include rash, swelling, breathlessness, or intensified redness or itching of the eyes. Always ask a doctor if unsure.
How do you store Opticrom Hayfever Eye Drops safely?
Through proper storage, the effectiveness and safety of the drops are maintained. Keep the bottle in its outer carton in the dark and at room temperature below 25°C. Once the bottle has been opened, utilise the drops within four weeks (28 days)—even when there is still liquid left in the bottle—because after four weeks, the solution would no longer be sterile and could cause eye infections. Place the date of the initial opening on the bottle or carton so you won't forget when to dispose of it. Store the product out of the reach of children at all times. Do not use drops if the packaging is damaged or the solution has turned cloudy or colored.
When should you stop using Opticrom Eye Drops?
While Opticrom is effective for most people, stop using the drops and see your physician or pharmacist if your symptoms do not improve within 2 days or worsen. In addition, if you experience any of the reactions that indicate an allergy—rash, breathing trouble, swelling in the face, swelling of lips or tongue, or more redness and swelling in your eyes—stop using the product immediately and see a physician. You should also consult a doctor if you plan to use the drops for more than 14 consecutive days without a break, as extended use without supervision is not recommended. Remember that these drops are particularly meant for eye symptoms of hay fever alone, not for eye infections or other conditions of the eye
