This local anaesthetic provides effective pain relief from mouth pain, ulcers and denture irritation. The formulation is a gel, which makes it easier to target a specific area. Anbesol adult contains the highest strength of Lidocaine available in oral pain relief, making it suitable for different altitudes of pain. This can be used from 12 years onwards and is also sugar-free, making it ideal for people with diabetes.
Anbesol has three key ingredients, which hold two fundamental properties. Lidocaine, one of the ingredients, works as a local anaesthetic. It works temporarily by blocking pain signals, causing numbness and relieving pain in the area it is applied to. The other ingredients, chlorocresol and cetylpyridinium, are antiseptics that help prevent the site from getting infected (further).
This gel is not suitable for children under the age of 12. It is also unsuitable for anyone allergic to any of the listed ingredients in the product. It is unsafe for patients who suffer from porphyria. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is important you speak to your doctor before using Anbesol adult.
If you think your mouth ulcer has gotten bigger or is not improving while using Anbesol, you should stop using it and ask your pharmacist or doctor for advice. Any side effect will most likely be a result of an allergic reaction. If you notice a side effect, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
