Bronchostop Junior is a cough medicine for all types of cough associated with a cold, including dry, tickly, and chesty coughs. Zarbee’s makes a line of cough syrups for children that are more readily available in the United States. These products are suitable for children aged between two and eleven years. They are available over-the-counter from any online or local pharmacy.

Doctor’s advice

How do I take it?

Bronchostop Junior and Zarbee’s come as an oral syrup. How much you can give to your child depends on their age and will be listed clearly on the product. You can give them to your child when needed, but follow the maximum suggested dose.

These products may delay the absorption of other medications. As a precautionary measure, you should not give them to your child within half an hour to one hour of giving them any other medications. If your child’s symptoms worsen or do not improve after a few days of using the product, or there are any severe or worrisome symptoms, you should speak with a doctor or pharmacist.

How does it work?

These products contain honey and other natural ingredients. They work as a demulcent, which is a medicine that forms a soothing coating over the lining of the throat, which reduces the coughing impulse in dry and tickly coughs. The soothing effect also helps relieve any associated pain and discomfort in the throat from coughing.

Who should not take the medication?

Do not give these products to your child if they are allergic to any of the ingredients listed on the label. You should not give these products to children younger than two years. If your child is under four, it would be best to speak with a doctor before giving them the medication to ensure your child does not have a more serious condition. These medications are not the best choice for adults and children aged twelve and above; medications specifically formulated for adults are a more suitable choice.

You should speak with your child’s doctor before giving them these medications if your child has diabetes, is intolerant to fructose, or has difficulty absorbing glucose and galactose.

Are there any side effects?

Most children that take cough syrups do not experience any side effects. However, sometimes they can have a laxative effect leading to diarrhea. Rarely, these medications can cause an allergic reaction. If your child develops symptoms of an allergic reaction such as a skin rash, shortness of breath, wheezing, tightness in the chest or throat, or swelling of the tongue, mouth, lips, face, or throat – this is a medical emergency and you should call the emergency services (911 in the US).
