Hylo-Night (formerly known as VitA-POS) is an eye ointment for dry eyes. The eye ointment contains retinol palmitate, liquid paraffin, light liquid paraffin, wool fat and soft white paraffin. Hylo-Night is sterile and preservative-free with Vitamin A supplementation.

Who is Hylo-Night for

Hypromellose eye drops are the first thing normally recommended due to their more basic formulation. They are primarily used for nighttime relief. However, it can be used throughout the day as well. However, Hylo-Night's ointment properties are more hydrating than Hypromellose. It relieves symptoms of burning, itching, and dry eyes by forming a comfortable, long-lasting protective film on the eyes.

Hylo-Night Ointment is indicated for the management of dry eye symptoms, including:

  • Dryness. Hylo-Night Ointment helps relieve eye sensations of dryness, grittiness, or irritation caused by insufficient tear production or poor tear quality.
  • Discomfort. It provides soothing relief from discomfort or pain associated with dry eyes, particularly during nighttime or upon waking in the morning.
  • Protection. Hylo-Night Ointment forms a protective barrier over the ocular surface, reducing exposure to environmental irritants and preventing further moisture loss.

Benefits of Hylo-Night ointment

The key benefits of using Hylo-Night Ointment for dry eye relief include:

  1. Long-Llasting hydration -The ointment formulation provides prolonged lubrication and hydration to the eyes, offering relief from dryness for an extended period, especially during sleep.

  2. Comfortable application - Hylo-Night Ointment is formulated to be gentle and comfortable to apply, promoting adherence to treatment and improving patient compliance.

  3. Non-blurring formula - Unlike some eye drops, Hylo-Night Ointment does not cause temporary blurring of vision upon application, making it suitable for use before bedtime.

  4. Preservative-Free: Hylo-Night Ointment is preservative-free, making it suitable for individuals with sensitive eyes or those who may experience adverse reactions to preservatives commonly found in other eye care products. This minimises the risk of irritation or allergic reactions, enhancing overall ocular comfort.

How does Hylo-Night work?

Historically, Vitamin A has a role in maintaining healthy eyes and reducing the likeliness of blindness. The ointment contains Vitamin A to help improve the tear film and protect the eye's surface. Due to its ointment and viscosity properties, Hylo-Night provides up to 6 hours of lubrication, much longer than regular drops, making it most suitable for nighttime. Also, what is beneficial about this formulation is that it lasts six months once open, whilst more formulations only last 28 days, so it is excellent for patients who require the use less often.

Should anybody not take Hylo-Night?

It is suitable for most people but not suitable for contact lenses; there needs to be a 30 min gap between applying the ointment and reapplying the contact lenses. It is also important to note if you are already taking high doses of Vitamin A by mouth, you may not require the additional Vitamin A and may increase the risk of taking too much. by mouth, you may not require the additional Vitamin A and may increase the risk of taking too much.

Side Effects of Hylo-Night Ointment

While Hylo-Night Ointment is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience mild side effects, including:

  • In rare cases, transient blurring of vision may occur immediately after applying the ointment. This effect typically resolves quickly as the ointment spreads across the ocular surface.
  • Some users may notice temporary stickiness or a sensation of heaviness in the eyelids after applying the ointment. This sensation should subside as the ointment disperses.
  • Allergic reactions to Hylo-Night Ointment are rare but possible. If you experience itching, redness, swelling, or irritation of the eyes or surrounding skin, discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider.

How do I apply Hylo-Night?

  • Wash your hands and remove the cap from the tube.
  • Pull the lower lid of your eye downwards to form a pocket.
  • Squeeze the tube gently to release the ointment along the inside of the lower part of the eyelid. Avoid touching the eye with the end of the tube as you do this.
  • Close the eye for about 30 seconds and then blink a few times to spread the ointment around the inside of your eye.
  • Repeat the process in your other eye (if required).

Hylo-Night vs other ointments

When considering when to use Hylo-Night Ointment over other hydrating eye ointments, it may be preferred in the following scenarios:

  • Nighttime use. Hylo-Night Ointment is specifically formulated for nighttime use, providing long-lasting hydration and relief from dryness during sleep. Individuals who experience more pronounced dry eye symptoms at night or who prefer a non-blurring ointment before bedtime may choose Hylo-Night for overnight application.
  • Minimal disruption. Because Hylo-Night Ointment typically does not cause temporary blurring of vision, it may be preferred by individuals who wish to apply an eye ointment without disrupting their daily activities or vision-dependent tasks, such as reading or driving.
  • Preservative sensitivity. Individuals with sensitive eyes or those who have experienced adverse reactions to preservatives in other eye care products may opt for preservative-free formulations like Hylo-Night Ointment to minimise the risk of irritation or allergic responses.
  • Long-Term management. For individuals requiring long-term management of chronic dry eye symptoms, Hylo-Night Ointment offers sustained hydration and comfort, making it a suitable choice for ongoing use, particularly during periods of extended dryness or environmental exposure.
