Lucid dreaming happens when you are conscious and aware that you are dreaming. During a lucid dream, you may be able to have some control over elements of the dream, such as the people or characters that appear, or what happens next.

Lucid dreams are relatively common, with research suggesting that over fifty percent of people claim to have experienced a lucid dream at some point in their life.
During sleep there are many stages, one of which is the rapid eye movement phase. During this time your brain and eyes are active, and you are more likely to dream. Lucid dreams can happen in this phase, especially if there is something that tips your sleeping self into realising that you are having a dream. Lucid dreams also occur just as you slip from being awake into the sleep state. This can be similar to a meditative state, bridging wakefulness and sleep.
