Lucid dreaming happens when you are conscious and aware that you are dreaming. During a lucid dream, you may be able to have some control over elements of the dream, such as the people or characters that appear or what happens next.

How common are they?

Lucid dreams are relatively common, with research suggesting that over fifty percent of people claim to have experienced a lucid dream at some point in their life.

When do they happen?

During sleep, there are many stages, including the rapid eye movement (REM) phase. During this time, your brain and eyes are active, and you are more likely to dream. Lucid dreams can happen in this phase, especially if something tips your sleeping self into realizing that you are having a dream. Lucid dreams also occur just as you slip from awake to sleep. This can be similar to a meditative state, bridging wakefulness and sleep.
