DLux Infant Vitamin D Oral Spray has been designed to make daily supplementation with vitamin D easy for parents and babies. Give one spray a day, which you can administer anytime—morning, afternoon or evening. You don't have to take it with food or liquid. The spray must be directed in your baby's mouth, preferably onto the inner cheek, since this will enable the absorption of the vitamin into the bloodstream. In your first use, it is crucial to prime the pump by releasing it three times, and also, do not forget to shake the bottle gently before every use.
It's simplest for most parents to add the spray to their baby's daily routine, such as when they nappy-change, brush their teeth, or dress up for the day. Once habituated, such a simple routine can bring long-term health benefits to your child.
Vitamin D is necessary for healthy bone, tooth, and muscle growth. It also helps the immune system operate correctly. Insufficient vitamin D levels in children and infants lead to rickets, which causes weak or soft bones. Although our bodies can synthesize vitamin D from sunlight, it's generally not adequate in the UK—particularly from autumn onwards until winter, or if your baby's skin is darker, as this will inevitably filter some of the sunlight.
Due to this, the NHS recommends that all infants from birth to age 1 year receive a vitamin D supplement daily, whether breastfed or partially breastfed. Formula-fed infants might not need an additional supplement if they have at least 500ml (a pint) of fortified formula milk per day. Children between ages 1 to 4 years should continue receiving a daily vitamin D supplement.
It's normal for babies to spit out the spray occasionally or for parents to forget a dose. If either of these occurs, no problem. Just administer the next dose as usual the following day. The impact of vitamin D is felt by continued daily use over time. If your baby always spits out the spray, try offering it when they are calm or distracted - perhaps after a nap or while being rocked gently. Spraying to one side of the cheek instead of straight into the centre of the mouth also helps avoid gagging.
Suppose your baby is premature, low birth weight, or has a medical condition that affects digestion or absorption. In that case, you must check with your doctor, pharmacist, or health visitor before you start any vitamin supplement. Premature babies may require a higher or more tailored dose of vitamin D, adjusted to their requirements. Your healthcare professional will tell you what's best.
BetterYou DLux Infant Vitamin D Oral Spray contains only vitamin D3 in natural coconut oil without artificial preservatives, alcohol, gluten or lactose. It is suitable for the vast majority of babies, including those with coeliac disease, dairy intolerance or vegetarian diets. If your baby is already taking any other vitamin or nutritional supplement, especially if they contain vitamin D, consult your pharmacist or health visitor to check that you are not giving too much.
Make an effort to place the spray in a visible location as part of your daily routine with your baby. A couple of parents place it near their baby's changing table or where they feed them to remind them. Placing the spray at room temperature and away from direct sunlight will keep it working for up to six months after opening. Ensure to replace the lid after use to be clean.
