Pharmacist FAQs Answered

What is Bio-Oil used for?

Bio-Oil is a multi-purpose skin care product with wide-ranging popularity for certain skin issues and general skin health. It's used primarily to:

  • Softening the appearance of scars and stretch marks
  • Improve uneven skin tone
  • Soothe and hydrate dry or ageing skin - learn about dry skin and hydration
  • Aid the healing of the skin after sun, shaving, or skin irritation

Its unique formula is a blend of plant extracts and vitamins in an oil base, which allows for easy absorption while forming a protective film on the skin's surface.

How does Bio-Oil work?

The success of Bio-Oil lies in its carefully balanced formulation:

  • Vitamin A stimulates skin renewal and promotes healthy cell growth
  • Vitamin E provides antioxidant protection and helps improve skin texture and levels of hydration
  • Natural oils like calendula, chamomile, rosemary and lavender are known for their calming, anti-inflammatory and regenerative qualities
  • PurCellin Oil™ technology makes the formula light and non-greasy, which absorbs quickly and deeply into the skin

Together, These ingredients aid the skin's healing process of healing, regeneration and moisturising.

When can I start using Bio-Oil after an injury or surgery?

For new scars, wait for the wound to heal and for any stitches to be removed before applying Bio-Oil. Application on broken skin can delay healing or irritate. If unsure, ask a pharmacist, nurse or GP for guidance.

Is Bio-Oil ideal for all skin types?

Bio-Oil is dermatologically tested and well-tolerated. It's suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin. However:

  • People who have a known sensitivity to fragrances or essential oils should do a patch test before first use
  • If you have oily or acne-prone skin, use it sparingly, particularly on the face, as oil-based products are not suitable for every skin type

Can I use Bio-Oil on my face?

Yes, Bio-Oil can treat facial blemishes, uneven skin tone, or premature signs of ageing. Massaging a few drops into clean skin after cleansing can replenish moisture and soften fine lines over time. On oily or blemish-prone skin, though, be on the lookout for breakouts and adjust use if needed.

Can Bio-Oil be used during pregnancy?

Yes, Bio-Oil is widely recommended to use during and after pregnancy to reduce the risk and appearance of stretch marks. Apply it from the first trimester for the best results, using it twice daily on the areas most likely to stretch. Apply it always with clean hands, and never apply it over broken or inflamed skin.

Is Bio-Oil cruelty-free?

Yes. Bio-Oil is not tested on animals, and many of the plant-based ingredients are sustainably sourced. While not officially vegan due to shared manufacturing facilities, it contains no animal-derived ingredients.

How long does it take to see results?

Bio-Oil is not an instant fix. Visible improvements may take several weeks to months, depending on your skin type and concern:

  • Scars and stretch marks: noticeable softening and fading usually take around 3 months of daily use
  • Uneven skin tone: application once daily for 8–12 weeks is usually needed to see a more even-toned complexion
  • Dry skin: immediate relief in texture and comfort is usual after a few starting applications

As with any skin care product, consistency is the most important thing. For best results, apply twice daily and massage into the skin until fully absorbed.

Can Bio-Oil be used in conjunction with other skincare products?

Yes. Bio-Oil can be used safely with the majority of moisturisers, serums, or body creams. It can also be used to enhance the absorption of active ingredients by applying it beforehand, particularly on damp skin. However, avoid direct mixing with high-strength acids or retinol unless advised by a medical professional.
