Pharmacist FAQs Answered

What is Biotene Mouthwash used for?

Biotene Moisturising Mouthwash is to assist in the relief of sore symptoms of dry mouth (otherwise known as xerostomia). This is when the salivary glands are unable to produce enough saliva to keep the mouth wet, which can lead to:

  • A dry, sticky feeling in the mouth
  • Difficulty in swallowing, chewing, or speaking
  • Bad breath or altered sense of taste
  • Greater risk of gum disease and tooth decay

Biotene helps by offering moisture replacement therapy – its ingredients mimic natural saliva to soothe and protect sensitive oral tissues.

Who can benefit from using Biotene?

Biotene is recommended for adults and children 12 years and older with dry mouth caused by:

How does it Biotene?

The ingredients include:

Glycerin and xylitol – that help hold moisture and reduce irritation

Sorbitol and poloxamer – soothing agents that coat and hydrate oral tissues

A gentle, alcohol-free vehicle – designed to revive without burning or drying

Together, these ingredients create a soothing, protective layer that moisturises the mouth and supports oral health.

Is Biotene safe for daily use?

Yes. Biotene is sugar-free, alcohol-free, and non-irritating enough to be used repeatedly throughout the day, making it ideal for regular oral hygiene. It's pH-balanced, too, to replicate the natural conditions of your mouth, minimising irritation and promoting enamel health.

Can I use Biotene in combination with other oral care products?

Yes. Biotene can be used in combination with:

  • Toothpaste, even those containing fluoride
  • Dry mouth sprays or gels
  • Medications, except as directed otherwise by your physician

Tip: Best results when used in combination with Biotene Toothpaste or Biotene Oralbalance Gel, particularly before bedtime when dry mouth symptoms tend to peak.

Can it be used long-term?

Yes. Biotene is suitable for ongoing daily use, especially in those with long-term or chronic dry mouth. If your symptoms persist beyond a few weeks or worsen, it’s important to consult your GP, pharmacist, or dentist. Persistent dry mouth can increase your risk of oral infections and dental problems.

Travel and night-time use

This mouthwash can even become part of your bedtime routine when saliva production during the night simply happens less frequently. Some even keep a spare small bottle or Biotene spray as a flight or hospital stay emergency relief.
