Buccastem M Tablets are to treat nausea and vomiting with migraines in adults 18 years and older. The active ingredient is prochlorperazine maleate, a phenothiazine class of medicine. These drugs work on the brain's dopamine receptors to prevent the messages that induce nausea. This makes them useful when migraine attacks are followed by queasiness or the urge to vomit. Buccastem M is absorbed through the lining of the mouth rather than the stomach, which is especially helpful if you’re already feeling sick and can’t keep tablets down.
This tablet isn’t swallowed - it’s designed to dissolve inside your mouth. After eating, place one tablet high up between your upper lip and gum on either side. It will soften and stick in place. Don't suck on or chew it, and don't shift it. Allow it to melt slowly, which takes 1 to 2 hours typically. It starts working because the gum absorbs it. Most individuals do not even realize they have a tablet after a few minutes. Do not drink alcohol when taking this medication, as it enhances drowsiness and other effects. Always follow advice from your doctor or pharmacist, especially about how many doses to take at a time when having a migraine.
Do not take Buccastem M if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18 years of age. Avoid it entirely if you have a problem with your liver, blood disorder, glaucoma, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, prostate problem, or an allergy to prochlorperazine or one of the ingredients listed. It’s also unsuitable if you’re known to have had problems with certain psychiatric or neurological conditions. Some people with muscle weakness disorders (like myasthenia gravis) or HIV/AIDS may also need to avoid this medicine. If you’re not sure, ask a healthcare professional before starting.
If you're 65 or older, or have medical conditions that make you at risk of blood clots or stroke - for instance, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or a family history of clots - your doctor may advise an alternative or monitor you more closely. Buccastem M can make your skin more sensitive to the sun and make you more likely to burn more easily. If you're taking it, avoid the sun for longer and use sunscreen or cover-up.
Buccastem M may interact with a variety of drugs. Always tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking anything for anxiety, sleep, high blood pressure, depression, seizures, or Parkinson's disease. Some drugs that may interfere include diazepam, propranolol, carbamazepine, amitriptyline, lithium, and warfarin. If you're unsure whether your drug may conflict with Buccastem, bring a list of what you're taking - including over-the-counter or herbal products - when you consult.
Each tablet contains 3 mg of prochlorperazine maleate, equivalent to 1.85 mg of base prochlorperazine. The remaining ingredients are sucrose, xanthan gum, locust bean gum, talc, magnesium stearate, riboflavin, sodium phosphate, and povidone K30. If you are sensitive to sugars or gums, this should be discussed with your pharmacist before use.
Store Buccastem M tablets in the original pack, out of light and heat, and at room temperature. Do not use the tablets after the expiry date printed on the box. As with all medicines, store them out of reach and sight of children. Do not take if the pack is broken or the tablet looks different.
