Product Summary

Daktarin provides effective treatment for fungal infections in your mouth or throat (oral thrush). It contains the active ingredient miconazole, which works by destroying fungus and associated bacteria that may be present.

Directions

  • Adults and elderly, and children aged 6 years and over: squeeze a small amount of gel onto a clean finger and apply to the affected area four times daily.
  • Children 4 months to 6 years: squeeze a small amount onto a clean finger and apply to the affected area twice daily.
  • Do not give to children under 4 months.
  • Continue to use for up to two days after the symptoms have cleared. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Ingredients

  • Active ingredient: Miconazole.
  • Also contains: Pregelatinised Potato Starch, Ethanol, Polysorbate 20 (E432), Sodium Saccharin, Cocoa flavour, Orange flavour, Glycerol and Water

Warnings and Restrictions

  • Daktarin oral gel is sticky. You should be careful to ensure that the gel doesn't obstruct the throat, as this may cause choking, particularly in children.
  • The gel should not be put at the back of the throat, and the prescribed dose may be divided into smaller portions.
  • If you have false teeth (dentures) and are treating oral thrush, you should brush the gel onto your dentures after you take them out at night to kill any fungus that may be on the dentures.
  • Treatment with this medicine should be continued for two days after the symptoms have cleared up, to ensure that the infection is fully treated and prevent it from coming back.
  • Complete the prescribed course unless otherwise directed.
  • Side effects may include nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Storage

Do not store above 30ºC.

Pharmacist FAQs Answered

How do I apply the gel safely, especially for young children?

To avoid choking, especially for infants and younger kids, always apply the gel in small amounts at once and never at the back of the throat. Apply a clean finger or a soft applicator to gently spread the gel around the mouth, focusing on the affected areas. If so, divide the full dose into small parts and give them gradually. This keeps the child safe while ensuring the medication reaches the infection.

Can I eat or drink after using the gel?

It's best to wait at least 30 minutes after applying the gel before eating or drinking so the medicine can work. Eating or drinking too soon can wash off the gel before it has fully treated the area. For children, attempt to apply it after a meal so they won't need to eat or drink right away.

What should I do if I forget a dose?

If you forget to take a dose, take it when you remember. However, if you're close to the time you would have the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal schedule. Do not take an extra dose of gel to compensate for a missed dose because this will be of no benefit and could result in an increased risk of side effects. If in doubt, ask a pharmacist for advice.

Can I use Daktarin gel at the same time as other oral treatments?

Daktarin oral gel can interact with some other medications, especially those swallowed and absorbed from the stomach, such as warfarin or some antihistamines. Tell your pharmacist or doctor about all the medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter or herbal remedies. They can help decide if Daktarin will be okay for you to use.

Why do I need to keep using the gel once my symptoms disappear?

Although oral thrush's white patches and pain may disappear, the infection can remain. Continue applying the gel for at least two full days after the symptoms disappear to guarantee the fungus has been eliminated and will not come back. Stopping too early is one of the main reasons thrush comes back.

How can I avoid the recurrence of oral thrush?

To prevent thrush from recurring, finish the entire course of treatment and maintain good oral hygiene. If you wear dentures, remove them at night and apply the gel to the dentures as well. Rinse your mouth after inhaling, especially if the inhalers are steroid-based. Maintaining a clean and dry mouth, not eating sweets, and treating any underlying disease (e.g., diabetes) also reduce the risk of reinfection.

Can kids and adults use the same tube of Daktarin gel?

It is preferable not to share a tube of Daktarin oral gel between different people, even if they are from the same family, since oral thrush is infectious and treatment for each person may be slightly different. Also, sharing can cause cross-contamination. Every person should have his/her own tube, and the cap has to be screwed back on after use in order to maintain the medicine free from infection and effective.
