Xailin night is an eye ointment for the treatment of dry eye conditions, corneal erosion and to lubricate the eyes before or after eye surgery. It contains paraffin and wool alcohols (lanolin) which all serve to lubricate and protect water loss from the eyes. This, in turn, relieves symptoms of dry eyes and forms a protective barrier on the surface of the eye.

Doctor’s advice

Who is it for?

You can buy Xailin night for the self-treatment of dry eyes, or you may be recommended or prescribed Xailin night by your doctor or specialist. It is a non-drug formulation that can be used safely and effectively in many people. It comes as an ointment that can provide long-lasting relief of dry eyes.

How do I use it?

Xailin night is an eye ointment that comes in a tube. Wash your hands before applying the product to your eyes. Gently pull down the lower eyelid to produce a pocket between your lower lid and eye. Squeeze a small amount of Xailin night into this pocket ensuring the tip or the tube does not touch the eye. Let go of your lower eyelid and blink a few times to spread the ointment around the surface of the eye. Use as often as necessary into the affected eyes.

Pharmacist recommended products

Should anyone avoid taking it?

Do not use Xailin night if you currently have an eye infection. You should avoid Xailin night if you have any allergies or sensitivity to paraffin or lanolin. If you wear contacts, remove them first before applying Xailin night, wait at least 30 minutes before inserting your contacts again. If you need to use other eye drops alongside Xailin night then you should use Xailin night last unless advised otherwise, and wait at least 5 minutes between applying any other eye drops and ointments.

Are there any side-effects?

Xailin night is a greasy and occlusive ointment that can temporarily blur the vision after administration. If this affects you, be safe and make sure you do not drive.

In some instances, you may have a sensitivity to the ingredients in Xailin night. If you experience redness, swelling or pain in or around the eyes, stop using Xailin night and seek the advice of your doctor or pharmacist.
