The Aveeno range of skincare products has been formulated to treat dry, sensitive or eczema-prone skin. These products are developed as cream, ointment, body wash, and other formulations and come in various pack sizes.
Unlike many other dry skin products, the main ingredient in the Aveeno range is prebiotic colloidal oatmeal. It is a safe and natural alternative to paraffin-based products. The Aveeno range is excellent for more sensitive skin, especially babies. They are primarily fragrance-free and have minimal ingredients to ensure they are gentle on the skin. It is also an excellent alternative for patients with intolerances to paraffin-containing products.
With consistent regular use, this repairs dry skin. Depending on the severity, this can be used up to four times daily to maximise efficacy.

Aveeno cream is the most popular out the Aveeno range due to its suitability for all the different skin types and conditions.
While this targets those with inflamed, irritated or dry skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis, it’s effective and gentle so that anyone can benefit. As we get older and lose the protective properties of collagen and elastin, our skin can become drier, so it’s a good choice for the elderly to prevent dry, itchy skin. Children may also benefit, as they often have more sensitive skin or need moisture replaced from activities such as swimming. They can also be a soap replacement for hydrating skin that usually dries out after showering.
The Aveeno cream has oatmeal, which is different to paraffin-containing products, making it have only mild hydration properties. It is a gentle moisturiser for dry areas but not as quickly spread as a lotion, so it requires more effort for large areas.
There is no one correct answer. Most eczema-targeted skin products contain the same main ingredients: soft white paraffin and light liquid paraffin. Some skin products use an alternative to paraffin, such as oatmeal in the Aveeno range. Similarly, Epimax also offers an oatmeal alternative. The reason why paraffin is more popular is that it is easily formulated and is more moisturising.
Different products may add in other types of moisturisers or exfoliants - Cetraben contains citric acid for this purpose and antimicrobials. So, it is about trying a product and seeing if it works for you. Aveeno cream may suit you if you are looking for a simple formula which is very hydrating and paraffin free.
In terms of formulations, ointments are recommended for dry, scaly or rough skin, as they last much longer between applications and provide more skin repair. But they have a greasy texture and may not agree with everyone. Creams and lotions are less greasy. However, they will require frequent reapplication.
Aveeno cream is very well-tolerated. However, anyone allergic to any ingredients listed, such as oatmeal, should avoid Aveeno. Also, Aveeno should not be applied to fresh burns.
The ingredients in Aveeno cream may cause an allergic or sensitive reaction in some. Other side effects include burning, stinging, itchiness and redness of the application area. In this case, stop using it, remove it from the skin by washing it with water and a mild soap, or wiping away with a towel. Seek medical advice if necessary.
